Wow! I have read a few books by Rachelle Ayala though this is the first in her baseball series. I am forever reading out of order with her series. This has proved to me that she has a few things consistent: her books can be read as stand alone even though they are part of a series; she embraces difficult topics; her characters are so well developed you forget they aren't real people.Playing Catch deals with the difficult topics of child abuse, sexual abuse and rape. I'm not going to dive deeply into it because I don't want to spoil things for readers. The author writes a compelling story about real love, with all its flaws and glories. This isn't a hearts and flower book. The main characters, Jeanine and Kirk, are flawed individuals. They both had childhoods that were stolen from them. They both believe they aren't seeking love even though they are. In truth, we all seek love, whether or not we want to admit it. Life had taught them that love wasn't always what it should be. Early in life they both got a distorted vision of love. Does this make them a perfect pair with a true love or a damaged pair fulfilling a distorted view of love? There are many twist turns along the path to the answer to that.
In my opinion, Ayala handled this topic in a sensitive and honest manner. You may not like the choices the characters make, in truth you may not understand them, which is probably a good thing for you. It means you didn't walk down that rocky road. You don't have the personal experience knowledge of just how much child abuse can distort ones view of themselves, the world, love and life. Reading this book will give you an idea of it. This isn't to say this is a depressing story. It is, but, it is also a hopeful story that leaves you with the knowledge that any past can be overcome. Forgiveness is an option, the one we should be choosing everyday. There is a rainbow out there but we have to be open to seeing it. There is hope for anyone willing to work on their issues.
This is a book I would recommend to mature readers who want a real love story. Be warned though, it has triggers.

Intense, deeply moving, and romantic are the three phases that come to me when I think about Playing Catch. Even knowing that the heroine was involved in sexual abuse, I was still shocked at the depth of damage it can do to a person. In the beginning of the novel both Jeanine and Kirk come across as the total douche bag player out for only their own pleasures. Both think they are winning life until they meet each other and then their worlds come crashing down.
I really like Ayala's writing style. She manages to make a very sensitive subject approachable and reprehensible at the same time. Not many authors would be able to share the story of sexual abuse in a manner that doesn't come across as inappropriate.
Playing Catch centers around a minor league star catcher and a no-nonsense business owner. Both are intensive careers, but do not define the characters. I really liked how Jeanine worked hard to overcome her past. The one thing I didn't like was the ending. It felt rushed and glossed over.

I dont know where to start about this book more than that this is not like any other love story I have ever read.This has not one, but two very heavy subjects even if both is about sex. I felt angry, sad, upset and discused when I read the book and I think that you cant read this book without feeling anything. It do get to you and I read this as an on nighter and well I couldnt sleep after due to images of what I read appearing in my head. This book really got to me and I am still thinking about it and how it effects me.
The book is very well written and you can feel how real it is. There is so many people who suffer from this things and this book really shows their lives and, I think, how they feel and still the book may make them feel better and give them new hope. It really shows that love is stong and can overcome the most horrible things if you just are willing to try and fight for it.
I can say that this book is not for the weak minded people who want a sweet story, it is much much more than that. This is a really heavy subject where love is a part of it, what keeps it together. No matter what I am gonna say will sound wrong right about now, because I really enjoyed reading the book and I am really really inlove with the book and the story even due to how horrible the events is, specially the child abuse. I am now talking about how the book is writen and the story and how it is all linked together and makes the reader feel and cry. I am happy that there is different types of love stories and not the sweet once we normally read. We or maybe I should say I, need other kinds of stories too and this is what makes the scale even.
I really can recommend this book to other readers but I also need to warn about that it is graphic and will upset the reader in so many ways.
Jeanine and Kirk are both "catch and release" people with their sexual encounters - one time with someone and they never have another with the same person. Both have an attraction to each other but are afraid to commit and don't want it to be a one and done relationship. Jeanine has problems from childhood sexual abuse from a foster father which is sometimes hard to hear about but it's good to know she's working on getting through her feelings. Kirk had problems with his overbearing mother. Rachelle Ayala keeps delving into hard situations and educates us with ways to overcome these problems. The narration of Charley Ongel and Tor Thom is wonderful. I really like the dual narration and it brings the story to life more.
